Domfront
Domfront town dates back to the 11th century, the first fortification
being erected on a sandstone promontory, which overlooked the River
Varene around 1010.
Domfront was surrounded with deep moats and an enclosed wall built
by Guillaume de Talvas. For many centuries Domfront castle was one
of France’s strong holds due to its strategic position.
Today it offers great exploring for young and old, through the winding
cobbled streets. You can experience the castle ruins where excavations
are ongoing, two historical churches dating back to 1020, many other
timbered historical buildings, and of course the great restaurants,
bars and calvados & poire tours in the surrounding area.
Every two years Domfront hosts its own hugely popular mediaeval re-enactment
weekend in August, with a jousting tournament, troupes of actors &
players in costume and mediaeval markets. The old streets are full
of character with the costumes matching the architecture. Further
details can be found on www.domfront-medievales.com
As the town where William the Conquer was christened Domfront is justifiably
a mecca for lovers of history, culture & architecture.
